Welcome to Covert Farms Family Estate

Welcome back all! Today I'll only be featuring one winery because it was such a cool experience and I don't want to take away from it by having to condense some stuff. Let's get to it!

The Winery: Covert Farms Family Estate

Look, I'll admit that when I found this place I didn't think it would actually be a farm, but I was quickly proven wrong! Covert Farms is a 4th generation organic farm and winery and has been around since 1959. When it comes to wine, they take more of a minimal-intervention approach in an attempt to make their vines more resilient and less susceptible to climate change. Because I didn't really know anything about Covert before I got there, I wanted to do a tasting that would allow me to really get a sense of their wines and who they are, so I opted to do the Private Epicurean Grand Reserve Tasting! Try saying that 5 times fast...The tasting involved 7 wines from their profile paired with locally sourced cheeses and cured meats, and even fresh produce and flowers are grown on the farm itself! Let me tell you, I've never had a better zucchini in my life. On to the wine!

1. 2020 Sparkling Zinfandel

First up was a sparkling wine, always a good way to start off a tasting! Covert is pretty well known for having a sparkling Zinfandel because it's not a very common thing to find! The wine is naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks and then is gravity fed into bottles, where it finishes up fermentation. The resulting wine is beautiful and light, with tiny bubbles that just foam up in your mouth. This was definitely an easy wine to drink in the heat of the sun. Full of pink grapefruit and apple and perfect to drink on any occasion!

2. 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

This white blend was 72% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 8% Viognier, and as soon as I heard that there was Viognier in the wine I knew I would like it. This was very light on the nose with notes of guava and lychee. It was also nice and light in the mouth, with a bit more of a floral/herbal aspect to it. This wine had a nice, crisp minerality to it and the acidity wasn't too high so I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was definitely my top wine of the tasting and I ended up taking a bottle home!

3. 2020 Chardonnay

For all my people out there who don't like an oaked Chardonnay, this one is for you! This Chardonnay was only about 25% aged in new French oak, the other 75% was aged in stainless steel tanks. It was very nutty and tropical on the nose and in the mouth as well, with some nice peachy/lemony notes to it as well. This wine had a nice balanced acidity to it from those citrusy notes and it was very lovely! Nice and refreshing and perfect for anyone who loves a good unoaked Chardonnay!

4. 2019 Rose

This Rose was a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah and was really lovely! It was very much strawberry jam on the nose and in the mouth it was full of strawberry and cherry notes. It's just gorgeous in the mouth, not too sweet. I love that overly sweet Rose is not really a thing anymore. The more dry style is where it's at! This Rose had a mouth-watering refreshing palate and is the perfect summer sipper.

5. 2019 Zinfandel Grand Reserve

This is one of the only Zinfandel's I think I've had all summer! This is one of Covert's premium wines and it was quite the treat! This is very nice on the nose with notes of blueberry and fig. In the mouth it was a bit spicier than it hinted at, with some nice notes of black pepper. There was almost a whole variety of spices in there but I couldn't really pick any specific one out other than the black pepper. The palate kept a hold of that nice blueberry note and added in some dark cherries to the mix. Zinfandel's are always so interesting and I'm happy I got to try one today!

6. 2017 Amicitia

This big red blend contained all of the top players! Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Syrah. This was a huge wine and I can see how it's one of their top sellers! It was beautiful on the nose with plum, cherry and even some floral notes to it. It was full-bodied with big, present tannins that just coat your mouth. Everything on the nose is in the palate and more, with that cherry really coming forward.

7. 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve

The last wine that was poured was another one of their Premium wines, it was the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon! On the nose it was lovely, lots of dark cherry, dark plum and dark chocolate. This, of course, was very fully bodied and very tannic. Everything you want in a Cabernet Sauvignon! It was spicy on the palate but still had all that nice red fruit, making this wine perfectly balanced in all it's flavours.

8. 2018 Syrah

Last but not least, I got to have a little extra pouring of Covert's extra special Syrah! Why is it extra special? Well, they only made one barrel of it! One barrel is the equivalent to about 300 bottles, so you can imagine how exclusive this wine must be. This had lots of raspberry and chocolate on the nose, with just a touch of that black pepper you expect to get. This was gorgeous on the palate, lots of rasperberry, dark cherry and black pepper. Very smooth but with a little bit of bite to it. This wine was just really beautiful in the mouth and I'm very grateful I got a chance to try it!

Did I mention that I love the labels?

Well as you can see, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Covert Farms Family Estate! This is a very special place, the wine is excellent, their snack bites are excellent and it's even family friendly! They do offer an experience where you can tour the whole farm and I think if I ever go back, that's what I'd do! Next up, we're going back into Kelowna to visit two different wineries that I've never been to before!

Whine of the day: I wish all tasting experiences included a food pairing option
